President Bush once famously quipped that one of the worst mistakes he'd ever made was trading Sammy Sosa. It looks like the Texas Rangers will undo Dubya's gaffe this season; Rangers manager Ron Washington has "no doubt" that Sosa will make the team as a DH, ESPN's Cactus League roundup reports.
The Rangers are probably hoping that Sammy will be this year's Frank Thomas -- a low-risk, high-reward signing who has the potential to blow up. Personally, I can't imagine that happening... and it seems to me that the Rangers would be better off using the DH spot to get at-bats for their glut of outfielders than they are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with Sosa.
Never mind the fact that they're just asking for a years' worth of steroid scrutiny and the associated drama in their clubhouse.
Maybe Rangers GM Jon Daniels hasn't fixed Dubya's mistake. Maybe he's compounded it.
Insert your own joke here... we don't do politicial humor.
Speaking of Steroid Scrutiny...
New Detroit Tiger Gary Sheffield hasn't been shy in expressing his opinions this spring. His primary target has been Yankee skipper Joe Torre. Sheffield is a player who seems to perform better when he's angry about something; if that's the case, he could be in for a big season.
